JavaScript Deep Dive
JavaScript is one of those languages that lets you get remarkably far without truly understanding it. You can build entire applications, ship features, and land jobs with nothing more than a working knowledge of its syntax. And for a while, that is perfectly fine.
But at some point, something shifts. You encounter a bug that defies your mental model. A this that points somewhere unexpected. A closure that holds onto variables you thought were long gone. A Promise chain that executes in an order you cannot explain. You stare at the code, and the code stares back, and neither of you blinks.
These are the moments that reveal a gap between knowing how to write JavaScript and understanding what happens when you do. This section exists to close that gap.
What This Section Is Not
This is not a syntax guide. It is not a tour of language features, and it is not a reference manual. If you are looking for an introduction to variables, loops, and functions, there are wonderful resources out there for that, and you should start with those.
This section assumes you can already write JavaScript. You know what a function is, you have used objects and arrays, and you have a general sense of how to get things done in the language. What you may not have is a clear picture of what the engine is actually doing when your code runs.
What This Section Is
This is a deep dive into the machinery beneath the surface. Every topic is explored from the engine's perspective: what happens in memory, what the specification defines, what V8 (or any engine) actually does when your code runs. The goal is not to memorize rules, but to understand them so thoroughly that you can predict JavaScript's behavior in any situation.
We will start at the very beginning, with how JavaScript code is parsed, compiled, and executed. From there, we will build outward through the type system, scope and closures, the object model and its prototype-based inheritance, and finally into the asynchronous machinery that makes a single-threaded language feel concurrent.
Each article builds directly on the previous one. Concepts are introduced only after the foundations needed to understand them are firmly in place. By the end, the language should feel less like a collection of quirks and more like a coherent system with clear, predictable rules.
The Path Ahead
The journey is divided into five parts, each following a natural progression through the language.
The Engine and Execution Model lays the groundwork. We will trace the path from source code to running instructions, understand the data structures the engine creates every time your code executes, and explore how JavaScript manages memory behind the scenes.
Types and Operations examines the values your code manipulates. JavaScript's type system is unusual, dynamic and loosely typed, full of implicit conversions that can surprise even experienced developers. We will learn the exact rules the engine follows, so that those surprises become predictable.
Scope and Functions builds on the execution model to explain how the engine resolves variable names, how closures work as a natural consequence of lexical scope, and how modern modules provide the ultimate scope boundary. This part also covers higher-order functions and callbacks, which set the stage for everything that follows.
Objects and Inheritance explores the other fundamental building block of the language. We will move from property descriptors up to the prototype chain, see how classes are syntactic sugar on top of it, and finish with Proxy and Reflect, which reveal the internal methods that underpin all object operations.
Asynchronous JavaScript is the culmination. Armed with an understanding of the call stack, callbacks, and the single-threaded nature of the language, we will dive into the event loop, Promises, async/await, and generators. By this point, the async model should feel not like magic, but like a logical extension of everything we have learned.
